The Spiritual Need

In our previous study of mans primary needs, I cited out humanity’s need as being Self esteem and Security. However, those are not the only ones. In this post is the third and very important need faced by every human being. It is the Spiritual Need. Inside you and me is a craving to reach out or even know the unknown.  You may decide to handle it consciously or even try to ignore it depending on what knowledge you have on the topic and how much value you attach to it, but the fact is that it remains our crucial need.

Last week I listened to one of the most interesting programs in our national radio stations. In it a professional medical doctor defined sickness as an imbalance between man and nature. I felt it was one of the intelligent definitions I ever got about our health problems. I sincerely enjoyed his scientific and philosophical approach in answering the many questions that the eager radio audience put across to him. It was a late show and with a lot of humor, this doctor kept my wife and I laughing.

However, I later saw some gaps especially in connection to the diseases that have a spiritual and not natural connection. Over the years, I have seen people being literally cursed and have fallen sick and even died not long from the time of the utterance meant to curse them. I also know of families that suffered queer diseases and proneness to accidents till a ritual that a great grand father made long before they were born was undone.Thereafter health and peace was restored to these families. There are also spots in some roads where accidents have been a scribed to due to sudden  supernatural appearances that confused the drivers thus causing accidents. Also as a christian leader, I have personally prayed and counseled former sorcerers and witch doctors whose ritualistic sacrifices caused many to go mad and some times to rotate around the area where the ritual was done till the time of prayer and counseling.

The incident of a Muslim woman whose co-wife was terrorizing her life with witchcraft was a pathetic one. Night after night this woman could not put of the light in her room because, immediately she did it, she would hear the rumbling of plates and cups by an unseen being. After prayer and counseling this woman today enjoys sleep just like any other normal person. In the same note I also prayed for a sister-in-law who suffered childlessness and in a weekly basis had a spiritual being come in a form of a man every two weeks and would literally force her to have sex with him. Desperate for a child she tried witch doctors to no avail. The spirit that always had sex with her couldn’t allow this.

As a ‘successful living’ reader, what then does this mean to you and me? It means that just as we need a balance with nature or environment, we even more need to strike a balance with the spiritual and the supernatural. I am glad I understood this early in my life and although the revelation came in bits, today  I have the joy of helping many reach the spiritual balance too, where they no longer have lack spiritually. Here it is important to note that the spiritual world is far more  superior to the natural one and that this is the reason you will see a highly educated man, or even highly positioned in terms of government, bowing down to an uneducated witch and being commanded to remove shoes, probably to even kneel as he enters the shrine.

Incredible isn’t it? But these are practical things that happen in our communities and the answer is in the spiritual balance!

In the epistles of St Paul the great scholar and philosopher of Judo Christianity, there is a story where this great scholar and philosopher met people worshiping an unknown God. These people had the zeal to meet the craving for God embedded in every human being, but they were doing it in a wrong way. Actually they were worshiping idols and Paul knew what exactly they needed – a pointer to the True God.

Paul then stood in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: ‘men of Athens! I see that in every way you are religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown, I am going to proclaim to you.”

“The God who made the world and everything in it, is the Lord of heaven and the earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places that they should live. God did this so that men would seek him, and perhaps reach out to him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.  For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘we are his offspring’.”

“Therefore since we are Gods offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone-an image made by man’s design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice, by the man he has appointed. He has given proof  of this to all men by raising him from the dead” (ACTS 17:22-31)

There is no doubt that many today are striving to meet and fulfill the crave for the spiritual in their lives are making the same mistake the Athens in Paul’s days did. There is rampant idol worship all over the world today. Some communities try to find acceptable words to prove their acts. They call their acts a science. Others end up abusing drugs. But even amidst this confusion I am ready to guide you to a place of peace and joy in your life that neither threat for death can take a way through the materials found in ‘successful living’ posts and you too could guide others by sharing with them what you find in this blog.

Thank you for being part of the ‘successful living’ readers and please do not forget to live your comment behind.
